Concealer is key to a flawless makeup look. It brightens your skin, highlights your features, and hides pesky skin imperfections! But to get that glowing look, you may be overlooking a terrible side of the makeup industry --animal testing. Testing products on animals is unethical and unnecessary. Any living, breathing creature shouldn’t suffer just so we can get a sleek makeup look.
Luckily, many countries and makeup companies are now committed to shifting away from the horrible practice. Finding cruelty-free makeup products was a difficult task just a short while ago. Imagine how much harder it would have been to find the best cruelty-free concealers. But, we now have more choices than ever so there’s really no reason not to go cruelty-free on your cosmetics.
How to Know if the Concealer is Cruelty-Free
Want to go cruelty-free on your concealer? Here’s how to know if the concealer is cruelty-free:
Read the Labels
This is getting harder and harder each day as makeup companies are slowly finding out that clean, organic, and cruelty-free makeup sells. Don’t be overwhelmed with the many badges, seals, and certifications written all over your products. What you need to find are accreditations and logos by respected organizations such as The Vegan Society, Peta, Choose Cruelty-Free, or Leaping Bunny.
Visit the Makeup Company’s Website
Companies usually state it on their website if their products are cruelty-free. If it's not on the product page itself, you may be able to find it in their FAQs section.
Be Thorough with Your Research
As I’ve mentioned earlier, cruelty-free sells. This is why a lot of makeup companies will try to pass off their products as cruelty-free as easily as they can. Make sure that the company’s claims are backed up by doing your own research.
Sticking to the reputable organizations would still be your best bet. These organizations also have lists of certified cruelty-free products and companies on their website which makes your search much easier.
Reach out to the Company Yourself
You can message or email the company if you don’t see the right tags or badges on the product labels or if you can’t find enough information on their website. However, it may take a while before you get a response and you may even have to do follow-ups.
To make your search even easier, we’ve rounded up a list of the best cruelty-free concealers plus reviews!
Best Cruelty-Free Concealer Reviews
E.L.F. Cosmetics 16HR Camo Concealer
It’s vegan, cruelty-free, and it’s 100% free phthalates, parabens, nonylphenol, Ethoxylates, triclosan, triclocarban, and hydroquinone plus! The 16HR Camo Concealer from e.l.f. Cosmetics is a liquid type concealer and it’s available in 18 shades.
This has awesome coverage and it is truly long-lasting! It fully covers acne marks and other skin blemishes. The brush tip also makes application super easy and convenient.
It can be a bit drying, however. It tends to settle into the fine lines around the eyes. A good primer before application will help a lot. You also need to test out the shades before buying as the shades tend to look lighter after application.
E.L.F. Cosmetics HD Lifting Concealer
Another vegan and cruelty-free liquid concealer is the e.l.f. Cosmetics HD Lifting Concealer. It’s available in just 3 shades: Fair, Light, and Medium. The shade range is a little disappointing and they tend to be dark so this may be targeted more for face contouring.
Nonetheless, your skin will thank you for this! The HD Lifting Concealer is enriched with Vitamin C, green tea, and mulberry so it helps with skin texture and dryness. This is also a pretty good formula that doesn’t settle into your fine lines and gives great coverage. It does not move or crease over time.
COVERGIRL - Trublend Undercover Concealer
Loving the fact that it is vegan and cruelty-free, the coverage of this is amazing too! It will cover anything from acne marks to tattoos. The large doe applicator is really helpful as well.
The shade range of the Covergirl Trublend Undercover Concealer is also a huge plus for skin that falls in-between shades. They have 30 shades available of this smooth liquid concealer.
You have to blend quickly, though, as this dries up in no time! If you have dry skin, this isn’t the right concealer for you.
NYX PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP HD Photogenic Concealer
The NYX Professional Makeup HD Photogenic Concealer is a vegan and cruelty-free liquid concealer. With 23 shades to choose from, this gives full coverage for hyperpigmentation and other skin imperfections. They also have color-correcting shades that are great for those who experience redness and raccoon eyes!
If there is one thing they can improve on it’s that blending can be difficult and it gets tacky if you don’t move quickly! You need to wear this over a smoothing primer to avoid creases too.
Tarte Double Duty Shape Tape Facial Concealer
If you want a hydrating and lifting concealer, this is the concealer for you. It’s long-lasting and gives full coverage as well. Most importantly, it’s vegan and cruelty-free! Great thing they have a full line of 30 shades available.
Careful though, this is a heavy liquid concealer and it will turn cakey with too much application. A little goes a long way with this one.
Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof
One more vegan and cruelty-free concealer from Tarte. Now it’s a stick concealer that is free from parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfates, synthetic fragrances, and gluten. With over 9 shades available, the Tarte Amazonian Clay concealer is hydrating and lifting. The formula is so creamy and easy to blend too.
I know it says it’s waterproof. Sadly, I didn’t find that this lasts very long especially in warm weather. It also has a heavy formulation so it will really melt off your skin when it’s hot outside.
IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Anti-Aging Waterproof Concealer
This comes in a whopping 48 shades! It gives you smoother, flawless-looking skin for a really long time. It may even last for 24 hours but I wouldn’t advise anyone to keep their makeup on for that long.
The IT Cosmetics Bye Bye liquid concealer is anti-aging and waterproof so you can have spotless, hydrated skin that keeps getting better. This is a thick formula, though. It can be heavy on the face.
Catrice Liquid Camouflage Concealer
The Catrice Liquid Camouflage Concealer gives great coverage and it’s cruelty and paraben-free as well! It’s a liquid concealer formula that uses no oil so it’s better for oily skin.
You can choose from 15 shades available. Plus, they have color-correcting shades so no more redness and gray areas! Longevity is pretty good too!
Those with sensitive skin need to watch out for this, though. The fragrance is so strong.
Wet N Wild Photo Focus Concealer
An HD, brightening concealer that doesn’t budge after several hours of wear. The Wet N Wild Photo Focus Concealer has been a holy grail liquid concealer for makeup lovers and it’s cruelty-free too!
The coverage is buildable so you can apply thinly for a more natural look or add layers to get full coverage. The collection has 14 shades available.
But one thing you have to note: this is another concealer that dries really fast. Beginners will have a hard time blending this.
LA Girl HD Conceal
The LA HD Conceal has been raved about for its wide range of shades that includes almost every skin tone there is. They have 43 shades on their list! They have color-correcting shades too! This cruelty-free liquid foundation provides buildable coverage from medium to full.
However, this is not made for oily skin. If you do have oily skin, use an oil-control primer before application.

This has buildable coverage that does not crease or settle into fine lines. The Milani Conceal + Perfect Longwear Concealer is vegan and cruelty-free. The liquid concealer has great longevity and it has a lightweight formula.
There are 18 shades available. The formula is best suited for dark under eyes and it really has that lifting effect.

Colourpop No Filter Concealer
The color payoff of the Colourpop No Filter Concealer is just perfect! You’re sure to find a good match from the 30 available shades.
This gives a smooth, full coverage and doesn’t feel heavy or tacky under the eyes. And, of course, it’s also vegan and cruelty-free!
The liquid concealer settles into fine lines if you don’t use a primer or eye cream underneath. Make sure you moisturize your skin well before application.
100% PURE Fruit Pigmented Long Last Compact Concealer
This vegan and cruelty-free cream concealer from 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented® is a compact cream concealer. It’s made from all natural ingredients and it’s free from gluten, sulfates, and parabens.
Yes, it has super fruits since the pigments come from antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables. The ingredients also include rosehip oil, vitamin E, and shea butter to help soothe sensitive skin and heal blemishes.
You can get away with not using a primer because this has a super hydrating formula. It goes on smoothly without creasing and lasts the whole day. This gives medium to full coverage with 6 shades available. But if you have oily skin, this can feel sticky and greasy after a while.
It Cosmetics - Bye Bye Breakouts
It’s difficult to deal with acne-prone skin. Using makeup can hide your acne marks but not choosing the right product will just make you break out even more. The Bye Bye Breakouts concealer fixes that. It is formulated with oil-absorbing zinc oxide, kaolin clay, witch hazel, tea tree, sulfur, and a mild AHA/BHA complex. Plus, it also has anti-aging peptides and hydrolyzed collagen for healthier, smoother skin.
The It Cosmetics Bye Bye Breakouts liquid concealer is oil-free, paraben, and cruelty-free. You can choose from the line’s 7 shades.
The concealer focuses on the skin benefits more than coverage. You can only get sheer to medium coverage from this. It oxidizes as well so better test out the shades before committing to them.
Cruelty-Free Concealer FAQs
Is Vegan and Cruelty-Free the Same?
This is a common mistake but the two terms have different meanings. Vegan products do not contain or make use of animal products or animal by-products as ingredients and materials in the production process. It is about the materials and ingredients.
Cruelty-Free means that no animal testing was done to any of the ingredients, components, or the final product itself. Cruelty-free products can still make use of non-vegan products like honey, beeswax, collagen, carmine, cholesterol, and gelatin.
Is Cruelty-free Natural?
Not always. Cruelty-free products are often free from sulfates but it can still be made from synthetic materials. Check your labels to make sure your concealer is made from all-natural ingredients and free from components that you may be allergic to.
How is Cruelty-Free Make-Up Tested?
Thankfully, we have great technology now that enables companies to replicate human and animal cells in laboratories. This assists scientists in the testing of products.
Human tissue can also be donated voluntarily for product testing. Person’s who underwent surgeries, biopsies, and transplants can become donors.
Computers can also be programmed to interpret and replicate human responses to certain products.
Is Cruelty-Free Makeup Expensive?
Cruelty-free makeup does not have to be expensive. You can definitely find affordable options. E.L.F., Milani, Nyx, Pixi, and Essence are all cruelty-free drugstore makeup brands with great selections.
Going cruelty-free is beginning to be a trend in the makeup world. However, this is a step we need to take because it is the ethical thing to do, not just so we can ride the bandwagon. Animal testing is extremely cruel and we need to start making better choices so we can stop this unnecessary and heartless act.
We have great options for cruelty-free makeup. Let’s support the companies who create products the clean and ethical way.
