How to Get Deodorant Stains Out of Shirts

Deodorant stains on shirts aren’t something which many people want to have. These can become stained to the point where the underarm area becomes very discolored and simply doesn’t look right anymore.

There are some things which you can do about these kinds of stains in your shirts.

Prevent Deodorant Stains

The first thing which you can do is to deter them from happening in the first place. Many times the shirt changes color because too much of the deodorant gets onto the clothing.

This can be prevented by applying your deodorant differently. Put it on when your underarm is dry and don’t put on your shirt until your armpit is dry again. This prevents quite a bit of the transfer.

Change The Deodorants You Use

Change deodorants as some are more prone to stain than others. You might notice blue stains from the coloring of certain deodorant for example.

You can go to a clear one so that the colors aren’t going to get on your clothing and cause problems that you don’t want to have.

Remove The Stains Immediately They Occur

Don’t let your shirt sit for days before doing something about a stain. Many times just leaving the stain to get set in until you do laundry is doing more harm to the shirt that you don’t need to be having.

Try to spot clean your underarm areas on the shirts as well as other sweat stains as quickly as possible. This gets rid of the dirt, grime, and salt quickly so the shirt doesn’t have to get worse.

Use Detergent/Hydrogen Peroxide

Soak your shirt in water with a little detergent or hydrogen peroxide. This will take care of the sweat and deodorant problems on the shirt.

Keep Your Shirt Dry

Try to keep your shirt dry as much as possible. Consider wearing an undershirt with certain types of clothing that you find yourself staining too easily. This will lengthen the life of your clothing.

If you are looking for a common household solution that you can use on your clothes then you may want to give this option a shot. Caution, please only try this first on a very small and out of sight piece of fabric so that you can test to see if there are any color fading or changes. However, this solution very mild and works on everyday fabrics such as cotton.

You can usually find these things around the home:

  • A little bit of water
  • Vinegar – white, distilled. Do not use any other types of vinegar!
  • An old toothbrush
  • Baking Soda

First, you want to combine the first 3 ingredients to make a paste, this may take some practice but it shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes or so to figure out the perfect mix. Second, take your toothbrush and lightly work the paste into the fabric.

Let the paste sit and set into your stain for about 1 hour or so. Lastly, just stick in the washer or wash according to care instructions!
